Lagan Boat Company was established in 1998 by Derek Booker and Joyce Anderson and in our early years we navigated up the River Lagan to Cutter’s Wharf. In and around 2001 we ventured across the Weir and were one of the first tourist attraction to tell the story of the RMS Titanic whilst sailing by where she was built and launched in Belfast Harbour. It was during these early years that an elderly shipyard worker in reference to the RMS Titanic informed Derek that ‘she was alright when she left here®’!
Derek decided this old shipyard saying was our logo and registered it as our trademark. It is now to be found on our exclusive T Shirts available on line and in our Ticket Office on Donegall Quay, Belfast.
Over the years we have observed, listened and photographed the many changes to Belfast Harbour, namely the gradual move from industrial shipbuilding architecture of Harland & Wolff to the newly founded Titanic Quarter. It was during the period of demolition, 12 years ago that we saved an important collection of ships plans and drawings from being burned. As a result we formed the Charity, Lagan Legacy which now operates the Belfast Barge, located further up the river at Lanyon Quay, close to the Waterfront Hall. On board the Belfast Barge, the permanent Exhibition is named ‘The Greatest Story Never Told’ details the shipbuilding trades, by photographs, plans, oral histories and artifacts that went into building these great vessels such as the Titanic. Admission to this Exhibtion is free (donations welcome)!
